Lithium ion battery

A Li-ion battery is a rechargeable battery, commonly used to provide power to electronic and electric devices including mobile phones and laptops. It consists of two lithium insertion materials, i.e., graphite and LiCoO2. The combination of these two insertions is important to realize the basic functioning of the battery Moreover, the battery can be easily modified to perform the desired functions by varying these insertions. The life cycle of a lithium-ion battery is typically around two to three years or a 300 to 500 charge cycle.
 

Lithium Iron Phosphate LiFePO4 Battery

Lithium Iron Phosphate battery, better known as a Lifepo4 battery is a type of lithium-ion battery that takes LiFePO4 as the cathode and graphite carbon electrode with metallic backing as the anode. It is highly efficient compared to other batteries and works on a lower operating voltage. The solution is inherently non-combustible and is useful in high power applications. The lifepo4 battery life cycle is about 5000 charge cycles when over 80 percent depth is allowed. More accurately, it can last longer than 10 years. This is such a big number meanwhile performance is never compromised.

Lithium Polymer LiPO Batteries

A lipo battery, RC lipo battery, or lithium polymer battery is a type of rechargeable battery in which a polymer electrolyte is used instead of the liquid electrolyte. It can be called a lithium-ion polymer battery because it is still made of lithium-ion technology, except for electrolytic changes. One can also charge a lipo battery using the required voltage and current conditions.

 

Comparison of Li-ion, LiFePO4, and LiPO Batteries

If we opt for a comparison of these three batteries, there are some factors that vary in all of them. Here, these factors are discussed in detail one by one.

The difference in Energy level

The energy level is a good comparison factor for these batteries because the difference is quite considerable. The energy density of Lithium-ion I'd higher, around 150/200 Wh/kg. This is why these are a good option for devices that require a higher amount of power. In contrast, the energy density of LiFePO4 is 90/120 Wh/kg which can easily be used for common household electronics that consume less amount of energy. Meanwhile, the energy level of the Lipo battery is 100/265 Wh/kg which provides a wide range of power supply for a lot of different gadgets.

Safety Considerations:

Dealing with electricity comes with the life-threatening fear of electric sparks, shocks, and other hazards. However, safety is always made sure while making the powerhouse of these electronics i.e., the batteries. However, batteries can differ on the basis of safety considerations. According to experts, manufacturers, and engineers, Lifepo4 is the best consideration for any battery BMS when safety is the factor. Due to its high energy density, Lithium-ion battery is given less advantage in battery BMS needing safety. Going in a respective manner, the RC lipo battery is the worst consideration if the requirements of battery BMS is safety. For years, it has been considered a highly dangerous battery. Accidentally dropping, crushing, or denting might result in fatal consequences. It also causes chemical fire if we charge the lipo battery in an unattended manner. So, the RC lipo battery must be handled carefully.

Lifecycle differences:

The life cycle of the lithium-ion battery, the lifepo4 battery life cycle, and the lifecycle of the RC lipo battery is the point where three of them differ from each other. So, Lifepo4 also takes the honor herewith being the most long-lasting battery with the minimum loss of efficiency. The lifepo4 battery life cycle exceeds 10 years and over 5000 charge cycles. The life cycle of the lithium-ion battery is not very high. It lasts for 2 to 3 years only and it also doesn't provide the maximum depth of charging. When we look at the RC Lipo battery, however, it does not provide longer usability but gives the maximum depth of charging. According to experts, it is not designed for the purpose of lasting long in battery BMS, so its lower life span (2 to 3 years) is not a compromise.

Applications of different batteries

These batteries are, of course, designed to perform different functions. The Lithium-ion battery is highly portable and of high energy density, so it is used in applications where portability is a factor and the gadget is really energy-thirsty. Examples include mobile phones, laptops, and other common electronics. Lifepo4 batteries are used where low energy can be enough yet safety is a factor. Moreover, it is not very portable but can endure harsh environmental conditions. So, it finds it place in military operations, depth sensors, etc. Meanwhile, the RC lipo battery is used in modern-day gadgets where sleek is smart. It is used in extremely thin mobile phones, laptops, gaming consoles, where high power is required along with a sleek look.
